Delightful reproductions of this paramount chess set : Isle of Lewis Chess Set by Studio Anne Carlton

I have to thank the previous reviewer who noted that these pieces are quite large--the king is admittedly roughly 4 inches tall. Therefore, I made sure to buy an extra large chess board.

The set is truly lovely, and a superb conversation piece if you know the peculiar history behind the 950-year-old pieces on which this set is modeled (included on a page inserted into the box). Made of bonded stone, each piece has a fine solid feeling in the hand. The ability of fertilization is good although not exact; a few details have been altered and the color does not mimic the creamy color of the traditional walrus ivory. Nonetheless, I think the very best representatives of the British Museum's variety were chosen for this set and it admittedly adds a fine satisfaction to a game of chess.

These somewhat brittle pieces are thought about packed to ship safely. Board is not included.

It’s been too long between Patricia Gaffney books. Too long, in this reader’s opinion, to settle in with a story told in her unique and engaging style. Fortunately, Mad Dash is worth the wait. Silly Dash, Stuffy husband : Mad Dash: A Novel

This was a decent read, but not my beloved Gaffney book. It pales in comparison to saving Graces. I found the nickname "Dash" to be a tiny bit superficial - sounded like the nickname was picked for the title of the book. The husband's character was a bit too stereotypical and I indeed did not enjoy the chapters written on his life.

I give props to the plot and the topic of the book - a husband and wife have marital strife after their only childs goes away to college. Gaffney did a decent job with Dash and her thoughts/actions/life. But Andrew was lacking. The chapters devoted to Andrew were devoid of substance and frankly, unappealing. I think she could have advanced his character a lot more and gave him more depth. He was more like the stereotypical genius husband without collective grace.

This book would make a decent beach read, but beyond that, look to Gaffney's earlier works for a great read. saving Graces is still my beloved thus far.
